When a techno album of this calibre lands on the doorstep you’ve just got to sit up and take notice. Meanwhile has once again proven that it’s one of the finest labels in any country and can stand tall and proud with the best of them. Conforce’s pedigree as a producer is certainly not in question and after a series of excellent releases comes this absolutely outstanding full length work. Everything I love about machine music is here in abundance, be it the kind of chords and pads that make me want to weep with joy, clattering percussion with more Motor City goodness than a lot of actual Motor City releases, depth, warmth, groove, soul, funk… you name it, it’s here. From the dramatic and classically retro intro with a slight tinge of house to the percussion, through to the more subliminal, rolling dubbed-out grooves, everything’s in place here to give you a scintillating ride through the purest of sounds. Check the samples and revel in one of the best long players I’ve heard in some time. Meanwhile are 100% on the money here and massive props go to Boris for an awesome collection of tracks.

Having come out slightly before the full album, the Love & Hate EP forms a natural companion to the vinyl version of the album by providing the tracks that are only on the CD version. The cuts on offer here are the purest of techno workouts that combine the warmth and flavour of Detroit chords with some seriously grooving rhythms and plenty of playability. I’m not going to start picking favourite from the Meanwhile catalogue because that would just be silly, but I have to say that this is absolutely up there with the best of them. Deep, authentic and truly momentous electronic vibes of the highest quality. A truly essential release once more from the ever superb Meanwhile imprint. Don’t miss!

Another absolutely lovely EP here from Under The Spire. Jannick Schou has put together a mellow ambient selection of organic tracks created from processed guitars and pianos. The first three pieces share a similar set of ideas and flow naturally from one to the next whilst the last track is a more intense drone / texture workout with a dramatic chord and a luscious grainy feel. Really beautiful work and definitely someone I’ll be keeping an eye out for in the future. Numbered edition of 150 copies.

Ithaca Trio’s Tesla Verses The Night really is a delightful piece of work. Taking the sound of organic instruments and electronics and melding them into delicate, melodic and very beautiful soundscapes and tracks you can really feel the careful love and care that’s gone into crafting these pieces. From subtle piano ambience through to a more grainy and washy kind of style, each track has a slightly different feel to the last whilst remaining similarly themed. A good balance between the more processed and overtly live sounding moments really keeps things flowing and I’d have to recommend this is another very fine release in the Under The Spire catalogue. Numbered edition of 150 copies.

Well, well, well… what have we here? Yup, that’s right it’s a new release and a new artist (well, kind of…) on the ever superb Ampoule label. Something of a different direction here in some ways, yet firmly rooted in the sound and style that’s been developed over the years. What’s immediately apparent right from the off is the darker feeling with some bit-reduced percussive sounds to give it some real oomph. It’s almost a strange kind of mixture of electro and dubstep in some ways, although that doesn’t quite describe it well enough. The first and last tracks concentrate on this vibe whilst the middle tracks are more reminiscent of, dare I say it, some of Pub’s more experimental work. With that said you’ll hear some familiar motifs in the form of melodic arpeggios and the kind of chords you’ve come to know and love from Ampoule as well as a blend of electronica and techno style percussive elements. Good start to 2010 this and as always it’s a right old limited edition of 100 numbered copies only. Check!

It’s always a pleasure to be able to bring you a new Ian Hawgood related release, and it feels almost sweeter when it’s on his own Home Normal label. Beginning life as the album ‘Soundtrack To A Film In My Head Which Will Never Get Made’ released on Rope Swing Cities, this collection of reworkings of those tracks is really quite a gorgeous selection of organic electronica par excellence. With artists of the calibre of Remote Viewer, Danny Norbury, Hannu, Chihei Hatakeyama, Ten And Tracer, Frederico Durand, Green Kingdom, Library Tapes, Color Cassette, Geskia and more all providing their own unique takes on Ian’s originals you can no doubt imagine how exceptional this album is. Each artist brings their own unique sound to the interpretations and creates a whole new micro-world of listening pleasure. Overridingly organic and full of engaging, charming sounds and textures, this is simply a must have album for fans of any of the artists involved and, of course, Home Normal itself. I think I’m also allowed to mention that all of the proceeds from the album are going to a UK charity which is close to Ian’s heart. Recommended? You bet. Gorgeous stuff.

Regardless of whether Ferro Organ is actually based around the sounds of an organ or not, it certainly has a spiritual feel to it that this type of ambient, textural musical is 100% at home with. One of the more static works in the Still Life series, it’s left to a tantalisingly slow build up to create the movement within the music. As the tracks moves ever forward a lightly grainy effect is slowly but surely added into the mix, and although at some points it feels like it will build up to a noisy crescendo Adam manages to hold back from going all out with, instead leaving you with a sense that you need to go back and experience it again immediately. I’ve listened to this track probably more than any of the others because of that. Quite apart from the fact that, to me at least, that’s a clever musical trick it’s also a bloody fine slice of textural ambience to boot that gets better with each listen. Yup, you know I’m loving this and therefore I have to say I think you’ll love it too! Limited to 100 numbered and signed copies.

The seventh part of Still Life is another ambient gem. Using a filtered down chord sound and resonating, phasing atmospheres this is truly a bliss out piece of music par excellence. Built around two simple, unresolving chords it drifts gently throughout its entirety with an underwater aquatic feel. Or is it a deep space feel? I don’t know, but the feeling here suits either of those descriptions with ease. The overwhelming feeling of being alone seems to be the focus once again – at least that’s what I’m getting from it as I listen (and believe me, I’ve listened to it plenty of times). An essential part of the collection without a doubt. Limited to 100 numbered and signed copies.

Thinning Silver follows up Evening Colours with a strong dose of darkness. Probably the most menacing of the series in some ways and definitely one of the more structured pieces. Whereas some of the others have a free-flowing style this uses shifts in mood and tone to brilliant effect and you really get a palpable sense of something haunting and, yes, actually quite frightening lurking just underneath. And you know what? That’s why I like it so much. What sounds like a bowed instrument of some sort provides the main meat of the track and from there the processing takes over and tweaks, filters and magics its way through 19 minute quite brilliant minutes. As a counterpoint to the more overtly beautiful releases this punctuates the series wonderfully and adds another layer of depth to this already frankly stunning collection of work. Tremendous.

I’m not going to start picking favourites from this series because when you get down to it they’re all really quite lovely. This, however, does get a special mention as the moment the first chord faded in I knew that it would more than hit the spot for me. Instantly dense and exquisitely dreamy, this shares aural themes common with the rest of the series – solitude, fragility and beauty – but seems to up the ante to a large degree. As the piece progresses a deliciously dissonant tone creeps in giving a sense of unease that perfectly complements the soaring melodic and classically inclined strings that eventually overwhelm the darkness once more. This really is utterly stupendous and a must for atmospheric music fans. Limited to 100 numbered and signed copies.

The next installment in the Still Life series, Split At The Core, finds Adam delivering yet another masterfully atmospheric slice of ambience. This release has a slightly more low-key feel than the previous work. There’s an almost choral quality to the underlying organ-style tone which is accompanied by higher end string layers that create a shimmering movement. When they drop out leaving the lower end texture it adds even more emphasis to the mournful, melancholic feel of this piece. Once again it’s another gorgeous addition to his already impressive catalogue. Beautiful. Limited to 100 numbered and signed copies.

Being something of a fan of Adam Pacione’s work, I’m thrilled to be able to bring you a very limited quantity of the Still Life series releases. Released once a month throughout 2009, they form a compelling and extremely beautiful body of work that sits happily within the organic drone / electronic sphere of music. The first two parts were released in different ways so the series proper starts with number 3, Drzewo. It’s a lovingly crafted 18 minute slice of almost classical sounding texture. Gorgeous and uplifting layers roll together to give you a serene and calming piece of music that is sure to be something you’ll love if you enjoy, for example, the work of Celer. Definitely one to check for the discerning ambient lover. Limited to 100 numbered and signed copies.

LENA - Circonstances Variations 1-4 (BC-02, 12")

This, my friends, is an awesome EP. Going back some time I remember really digging Lena’s album on Sub Rosa (or Quatermass – can’t remember which) as it was a supreme blend of techno, electronica and a Berlin-styled flavour that was deeply appealing to me. Now, nearly 10 years down the line here’s the first in a series of releases that absolutely rocks it for me. I’ve been privileged enough to be listening to this for several months now and I have to say it really is simply one of the best dubbed out releases I’ve heard in a long time. Not content with just sitting back and doing the obvious techno vibes, Lena delivers 4 delicious cuts that range from straight 4/4 heads-down goodness through to offbeat, more electronica sounding moments. Each and every track is wonderful with special props going to Variation 2 for being well… just utterly brilliant. If you have *any* love for deep techno and the sounds of Berlin this is a truly essential release. White vinyl, limited copies – killer sounds. Don’t miss as I can’t recommend this highly enough.

PLIIANT - Diipliioviila Part 3 (PLIIAN005, 3" CDr)

I’m well pleased to be able to bring you the third part of Pliiant’s Diipliioviila series! This is another cheeky, quirky selection of electronic based music with some really quite excellent funkiness going on. Every release has a slightly different vibe whilst keeping the overall flavour of groove intact and, as such, this one kicks off with some extremely toothsome disco vibes. Using that as a basis Pliiant strips it back to basics and then layers up some stupendously dramatic chords and sounds that give it more of a contemporary feel than you might expect. Clocking in at a mighty 11 minutes this is some seriously hypnotic gear and when that Hooky-style bass comes in you can’t help but tap along. The rest of the tracks are given over to varying styles ranging from funk to jazz and on through ambient and soundscapes. What can I tell you about Pliiant other than he’s one unique producer of very cool music. Lovely presentation once again and a killer collection of cuts. Check.

PLIIANT - Corson Sinclair (PLIIANT004, 3" CDr)

And here’s yet another example of why I dig Pliiant so much. Not content with funking me out grooves wise, here’s a 5-track EP that sits at the other end of the electronic spectrum. Corson Sinclair blends the purest of electronica vibes with a deep and washy shoegaze / ambient sound that at times recalls the sounds of Ulrich Schnauss, Gas, Last Days and even Celer (particularly on the last track). Layer upon layer of chords and melodies are blended together to create soaring textures that will uplift you, whilst the more low-key and rhythmic pieces are sure to find many a fan with lovers of Sight Below or the Pop Ambient releases. Add in Pliiant’s breathy vocal elements and you’ve got some well structured and beautifully produced low key sounds. Each piece has a feel of its own, yet thematically there’s a really nice continuity between the tracks. For sheer flow, beauty and versatility you really need to check this little gem out. Props to Mr P!

LONDON SNORKELLING TEAM, THE - Audio Recording And Map (BAH, CD)

Hot off the press comes this debut physical release for the collective known as the London Snorkelling Team. Quite apart from the fact that this really is an immaculately presented work that comes complete with an oversized cardboard cover and a delightfully quirky illustrated map (nope, they really weren’t lying about the map bit in the title!), we’re also treated to one of the most delightfully potty selections of music I’ve heard for some time. Well known for their live performances featuring trombonists and tap dancers (both of which feature here) this CD captures their unique blend of cocktail, jazz, lounge, TV music and eclectic electronic elements. From a mad waltz through to spooky detective music and on through Latin and low-key jazz styles via some super outright funkiness this is absolutely something that fans of Ghost Box or Trunk are going to adore. There’s something similarly and quintessentially ‘British’ about this music and it brings back memories of childhood, public service films and flared trousers… well, it does for me anyway. I’m loving this as it’s completely out there and really quite tremendous fun. If you’re a fan of the aforementioned labels you simply have to check this out. Pure class and something I’m extremely pleased to have acquired for Smallfish. Bravo gentlemen.

MATHIAS DELPLANQUE - Parcelles 1-10 (BC-01, CD)

From the first moment I heard the releases that were forthcoming from Bruit Clair I knew it was going to be a label that Smallfish would be very, very happy to be stocking! With this debut release label owner Mat has put together a marvellous collection of works that surf the line between experimental, organic and processed. There’s a whole world of sound to discover here as the ever-present guitars lock horns with prepared instruments and electronics to provide a constant background of intriguing tonality and background layering. The work here seems improvised, as far as I can tell, but adheres to a structural style that holds all the sounds together while allowing them to be fully explored in a number of compelling ways. Clattering percussive forces sit happily next to quiet moments of introspective drone with an almost ambient quality, but the prevailing sound is one of lively, playful and inventive sound design that uses noise as one of the main focuses of the tracks. Be prepared for some awesome future releases from this label that’s very much one to watch. Highly recommended indeed and a really excellent beginning for Bruit Clair.

RYOTA KANASAKI - Phonetilosophy (YUKI008, 3" CDr)

Now this is a classy and unique release from Koyuki. Having concentrated on micro electronics in the past it’s very refreshing to find this unusual release from Ryota Kanasaki. One of the main ingredients of the tracks is the use of vocals as not only a melodic component but also as rhythm, percussion and bass. We’re not talking about Bobby McFerrin here or a spot of beatbox – no, this is considerably more experimental than that and yet there’s an accessible feel to the resulting works that allows it stand out in the crowd. Angelic female snippets are combined with an earthy male voice and everything is restructured into lively and engaging music. The third piece adds in more of an electronic feel with some interesting samples overlaid whilst the fourth piece seems, on the surface anyway, to be completely free of vocals (although on subsequent listens I believe the main wind sounds may well have been sourced from recorded voices) and concentrates on an intense and, to these ears, very beautiful mid-range drone. All in all I have to say this is a release of the highest quality and it’s extremely pleasing to have Koyuki back in the fold here at Smallfish after a brief hiatus. Check at once!

NOS PHILLIPE - Nos Phillipe (BLKAT001, CD)

Robert Hopps and Jonathan Webb’s Nos Phillipé project is absolutely fascinating. Having released on Confront before they now deliver the debut release on their own Black Atlas label and it’s a self titled beast of epic proportions I have to say. This is one of the darkest releases I’ve stocked here at Smallfish for some time and, as you probably know, I’m more of a melody kind of guy, but every now and again something comes along that just knocks your socks off – and as far as 2010 goes, this is the first release in this style that’s done just that. The CD comprises three long pieces (including a live track from recorded at Café Oto) and each has a distinct flavour. From intense drone and doom laden metal influences to more delicate moments, this work is absolutely captivating. A massive range of sound sources are used and abused during the music, from scraped metal and cymbals to field recordings, guitars and turntables and they combine to make an unholy but totally coherent and listenable noise. In fact, it’s not really fair to just call it noise as it’s far more than that – the subtleties lie in the way the sounds work together to build an ebb and flow that’s as dramatic as it is seamless. For those of you who fancy something a little on the heavier side I reckon this is the one for you. A bombastic and powerful sound-fest all round – killer stuff.

IDO GOVRIN - Moraine (IL04, CD)

This is a splendid new release from the excellent Interval label with the man himself, Ido Govrin, delivering a wonderful album of engaging music. A combination of drone, ambient, experimental and live instrumentation, these tracks are thoughtful, at times intense, but generally delicately beautiful. Once again we’re treated to a deep blend that balances neatly between the soaring and uplifting and a more dissonant feel that helps to frame the more melodic pieces. Extended string soundscapes slowly morph and evolve over time with layers dropping in and out to give an almost classical edge to the compositions. The final two pieces, Medial and Recessional, take the sound into new territory, exploring ultra-minimalism on the former and grainy distortion on the latter – a fitting and dramatic end to a another first class releases from this really interesting imprint. For fans of Line, White_Line and Home Normal combined, this is a must-check CD. Tremendous.

SIMON SCOTT - Navigare (MIACD011, CD)

Simon Scott is an artist that I have a great deal of respect for. Having slowly built up a formidable arsenal of his own work whilst initially masterminding the Televise project (I won’t mention the Slowdive connection because no doubt everyone else will do that :) he’s now moved into working under his own name and, for me at least, it’s a totally natural move. Navigare comes complete with 11 lustrous tracks of deeply atmospheric music par excellence. Each work has a flowing and easy nature that guides you gently into the swirling textures and lovingly crafted arrangements which owe as much to organic, ambient electronica as they do the trademark washes of shoegaze sound (am I still allowed to say shoegaze? I’m not sure). Combining delicate and fragile melodic moments with some seriously robust passages of considerably more dense sound, this play of soft and hard, dark and light is what gives the tracks so much life. There are rhythmic elements but they tend to sit right at the back of the mix hinting at percussion rather than bombarding you with beats. There’s not a moment wasted here and by the time you get to the utterly incredible penultimate track, Spring Stars, you really feel like you’ve been on a sonic journey. Then it weaves a magical and abstract spell for the finale before drifting gently away. This is a tour de force for Simon and it gives me a great deal of pleasure to be able to bring it to you. A stunning album.

OFFTHESKY - Hiding Nature (HOMEN012, CD)

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Jason Corder is one heck of a talent within the electronic music scene. With a stupendous catalogue of releases behind him we are now treated to a beautiful album for the wonderful Home Normal label. Corder’s sense of melody and structure is second to none and the way he weaves tracks together is a real showcase for his innate ability to write music. Hiding Nature is a collection of naturalistic sounding tracks using a huge range of recorded sounds and electronics to convey a gentle and serene atmosphere. There’s something distinctly Japanese about some of the tracks with fluttering bell sounds and field recordings layered in the background, but then you’ll find a delicate and calming contemporary electronic passage that really wouldn’t sound out of place on 12k. The overall sense here is a tangible feeling of warmth and friendliness, but put together with an eye for abstract detail. That’s why it works so deliciously in my opinion as the blend of styles is pure bliss. Home Normal does it again and Jason Corder adds yet another string to his already bursting bow. A seriously fine album indeed and highly recommended.

A delightful way to start the week with this luscious work from Chiei Hatakeyama. As you’d expect this is a beautiful release that’s full of passion and calming, serene tracks with his signature natural flow. With Chihei’s music you can tell where he’s coming from by just reading the tracks titles; Reflecting On The Surface Of The Ocean, A Quiet Pond, Waves… they conjure up images of landscapes and seascapes, tranquil glades and warm afternoons. And the music perfectly suits these titles. Gentle, undulating ambience crafted with care and a lovely sense of charming melody. Mixing slightly more drone-based tracks with uplifting sonic textures, the blend works to create a soothing accompaniment to just about any situation. Whether working to it or simply relaxing and enjoying the friendly and engaging palette, you’ll get an awful lot of this time and time again. So dive in and allow yourself to be swept up in yet another exquisite release from Chihei and a further string to the mighty bow of the excellent Home Normal imprint. Recommended without hesitation.
